Clean, Classic Invitations: Because Sometimes Trend Free is the Way to Be

I recently received the sweetest video Save-the-Date from my cousin (wad up, Zac!) and his future wifey (holler for a dollar, Chelsea!), which I absolutely la-Louvred it!  Not only did Z+C take time to create a video that was sentimental, sweet and humorous, but it also took all of their potential guests on a journey :)  It began with Zac, my amazeballs cousin who happens to be an EMT for the Indianapolis Fire Department, riding on the IFD truck on his way to propose, followed by their request for all of us to “Save the Date” and concluded with a random selection of lol-worthy “bloopers.”  Seriously, so so cute!

^^^^^Like I said, so SO CUTE!^^^^^

And according to Mindy Weiss, one of the today’s most prominent and well to do wedding planners of America’s royalty, this is exactly what a future Mr. and Mrs. should do.  Weiss recently offered some advice to InStyle, stating, “If you are going to do a gimmick, do it in the save-the-date or website,” but alas, according to Weiss, this is where the gimmick train should end.

Because when it comes to the actual invitation, she suggests couples keep it clean and classic.  According to In Style, a couple’s invitation should be a classic beauty that [brides and grooms] will want to keep, frame and enjoy for all the years, cheers, anniversaries and new homes in the future.

It’s important to note, however, clean and simple does NOT {have to} mean boring!  I fear some brides may take this advice to extreme’s and think in order to create something clean and timeless, it has to be white on white and not stray to anything extraordinary, nor away from the ordinary.

To those brides, I would even more simply say, “Don’t be silly, silly!”  You can still incorporate some sense of whimsy and charm into your wedding day invitations, while adhering to the “classic” look.

For example, I’ve seen where brides and grooms will add a touch of lace or a pop of topography, maybe even a crisp element of design.  You could also consider creating an original monogram, crest or even a unique name play etc. and still provided something that will be frame-worthy and appealing through the years.

Try googling “clean” or “simple” or “classic wedding invitations” and take a gander at the images.  You’ll see, simple by no means has to be plain :)

8 Wedding Trends Brides Will *Fall* in Love With

As the summer wedding season comes to a close, we mourn the end of yet another ahhhh to the mazing run, while looking forward to the next best thing… (say it with me!)… Awesomely Autumnal Nuptials!  I absolutely LOAF fall weddings, and with October topping June for most frequented wedding month, it would appear everyone else has jumped on board too!  It’s just such a beautiful time of year :)

The humidity has finally eased off, the hair has frizzed down and the beautifully rich hues of ever-changing trees and trends start to take over.  With the world of weddings continually serving up great trends, this autumn is sure to be just as spectacular. Here are the hottest wedding trends wedding forecasters are predicting for the top of Fall’s Finest:

#1 Mixed Florals.  This category actually extends way beyond your typical bouquets of fresh blooms. Deep red roses, vibrantly orange calla lilies and golden sunflowers serve as fall favorites, but arrangements will incorporate the great outdoors, as well. Think rustic twigs with raffia, pomegranate succulents, fresh hay and the best crunchy hues fall leaves have to offer.

#2 Mini Pies.  These tiny treats actually blew up this summer as homemade reception favorites.  But warm and “nummy!” pies couldn’t have a better place than in the crisp weather of fall.  Not to mention, anything that comes in miniature is that much cuter and delicious!

#3 Styled Aisles.  Whether your ceremony takes place outside amongst the trees, or takes cover from the cold inside, your aisle is the perfect platform for some fall style. Jazz it up with a seasonal aisle runner, and embellish with mini pumpkins, orange lanterns, and leaves in every color.

#4 Caramel Apple Bars.  As wedding desserts grow more and more nontraditional, take a cue from a fall time favorite: caramel apples. Set up a buffet where guests can coat their apples with all the creamy caramel and chopped nuts they can handle.

#5 Tiered Dresses.  A striking gown trend that is sure to be in full force for the fall is tiered wedding dresses. These gowns range from feminine to structured, and are sure to be as multidimensional as your autumn wedding.

#6 Autumn-liscious Favors.  Send your guests home with a sweet slice of autumn. Apple butter, candied apples, and jars of apple cider are the perfect favors to thank your guests and celebrate the season.

#7 Bridal Cardigans.  Another craze garnering much attention these days is the bridal cardigan.  Ideal as a perfect touch of 1950s vintage, these trendy little sweaters are the perfect protection from chilly nighttime breezes and are sure to keep the bride rocking out the reception in style.

#8 Photo Booths.  Photo Booth mania hit a high this year and is no stranger to most bride-to-be’s. But when you get a backdrop exclusively designed for fall time weddings, you’re sure to have scored a fun reception accessory that most haven’t seen yet. Throw in a few Halloween costumes and let the good times roll.

Dreaming of a Destination Wedding?: You Name the Price, They Do the Work

Because who wouldn't want this has their backdrop? (courtesy of truephotography.com)

Because who wouldn’t want this has their backdrop? (courtesy of truephotography.com)

Brides looking to do destination weddings on a budget have one more reason to cheer… for Paradise Maui Weddings is here!  Recently, a girlfriend went through this very same site to book her nautical nuptials , I couldn’t be happier with how smoothly everything has gone.  And while her actual day – October 12, 2013 – has yet to arrive, all the prep work has been a dream!

“So far, so good.  Everyone I’ve worked with has been super friendly, and super helpful.  I like the whole ‘name your own price tool.’  It always reminds me of Flo from Priceline… and I’ve always liked her, haha!” (Abby, Indianapolis, IN)

All joking aside, however, Paradise Maui Weddings is the self-proclaimed, very first “name your own price” wedding company that is looking to create a once in a lifetime experience for all of their once in a lifetime brides.

With wedding packages starting as low as $400 and ranging to as high as your budget will allow, there’s really no limit to what you can do with your destination wedding besides the ones set by yourselves.  Their packages include everything from in room hair and makeup professionals, authentic Hawaiian floral bouquet and lei arrangements, professionally edited photos and videos, as well as limousine services, pre-wedding planning, in-cred-i-ble ceremony locations and on-site assistance.

Seems pretty much perfect, right?  It’s no wonder this type of event planning is more appropriate than ever!  Even though our country may still be in a recessed state, destination weddings have continued to remain on the rise the past few years.  While most couples think of destination weddings as an expensive splurge, it’s not always the case.

In fact, brides and grooms doing the destination scene more often than not report they actually save on overseas excursions!  Because both the guest list, as well as the bottom line details are often cut for destination weddings, the final pricing can be significantly lower than the more traditional, hometown honey “do’s.”  And according to “not-from-around-here” newlyweds it’s easier and more fiscally responsible to travel for nuptials than to stay at home and throw a big friends and family bash.

You know what?  I’ll take their word on it, because Maui seems like a more than ahhhmazing place to set your wedding scene!  So, if any of my beautimous brides-to-be out there are planning on diving head first into one of these destination dreams, don’t forget where you got the idea… and feel free to send said inspiration station an invite!  I love Maui!  Haha :)

And don’t forget, here at Marilyn’s Keepsakes, we have all the perfect Beach & Destination Wedding Finishing Touches to really make your day a dream come true!

Trend Alert: 2013′s Happiest Color Combos… incorporated into Your Wedding Day!

courtesy of ravensfete.blogspot.com

courtesy of ravensfete.blogspot.com

Recently, I came across an article in MSN’s Living section which featured what they were calling “the happiest color combos of 2013.”  Now, you know me.  I like to keep it real.  It’s always been mantra that honesty is the best (& only!) policy.

So, with that being said, I have to admit when I first opened the link to the aforementioned article – I mean, hello?!?! Who can resist even happy color combos… let alone THEE Happiest?! – I wasn’t the most impressed.  Mayhaps that was do in large part to the fact that the first combo featured olive green… a green this pretty little lady has never been a particular fan of.  Love the name (I mean, Baby Olive?  C’mon!  CUTEST!)  Loathe the color.

However, as I kept going through the article, I found myself simultaneously searching for wedding pics featuring the same combos… and my olive frown turned right upside down!! Check out below for some of my favorite examples… then, continue scrolling for even more “happy” color combos!

Olive + Acid Green + Coral.

**And yes, this was the culprit which gave mm my knee jerk “Oh, honey, no!” reaction, which was quickly stifled.  But seriously, it’s all about connotation, people!  Think how much better this one would have been if they called it Fern + Chartreuse + Coral??  See what I mean :)

Turquoise + Blush+ Jade.

**A more feminine / muted collection of colors, this reminds me of the peacock themed weddings, which have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years.

Violet + Hot Pink.

**Talk about every little girl’s dream come true wedding – haha!  I couldn’t help but feature this ultra girly, and yet still so amazing color combo!

Lemon Yellow + Gray.

Top 10 Must See Wedding Movies for Today’s Modern Bride

courtesy of fanpop.com

Who doesn’t love a romantic comedy… and ones featuring weddings??  Fuhgetaboutit.  Even dudes have to admit there have been at least a handful of “chick flicks” that made them lol on more than one occasion.  So, while preparing for the day you say “I do,” why not revel in some cinematic gems that will get you in the spirit of things?

1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Okay, seriously, this one’s the BEST! Humorously combining the outrageous nature of bringing two families together as well as the joy true love can bring, this is movie fun for all!

2. The Wedding Planner

Ahh, this one brings me back to the college years when it played in me and the BF’s dorm room one million times :)  Men can love it because of Jennifer Lopez; while us ladies get to feast on the man candy that is Matthew McConaughey.

3. Father of the Bride (Parts 1 + 2)

Good enough to denote a sequel.  Need I say more :)

4. The Princess Bride

Stop rhyming and I mean it!!!… Anybody want a peanut??  Haha, this is one that I loved just as much in my youth, as I do now –  pretty much every part is quotable.

5. Sex in the City: The Movie

Fair warning, you have to get through some serious rough patches before you can get to the happy ending, but like all good things in life, it just takes time. Be sure to watch this one with girlfriends!

6. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Anyone care for a sing-a-long? Is so, look no further than this Oscar winning classic! Set in rural Oregon in 1850, this feature film has it all! From singing and dancing to adventure and comedy, you’ll be glad to watch this one again and again!

7. Wedding Crashers

If raunchy humor is your humor, than you can’t find a much more erfect fit than Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn.

8. My Best Friend’s Wedding

Love love love this one! Any movie that makes America’s Sweetheart

9. Mamma Mia!

Here we go again!! My My! (Yeah, yeah… don’t act like you don’t sing it every time you hear it too! Hehe!) For cereal, everyone… join in the chorus!

10. Funny Face

Okay, I’ll admit it… Audrey Hepburn is a dream! Arguably one of the most pristine faces ever to grave the silver screen, this drop dead gorgeous lady is ahhhhmazing in Funny Face! Not only is it a love story for the ages, but part of the movie is set in Paris!! Ooh la la! Za City of Lights!

Toast to You: 5 Ways to Personalize Your Day

courtesy of weddzilla.com

courtesy of weddzilla.com

Alright, ladies, if it isn’t clear to you by now, let me lay it out in the simplest English… Your.Wedding.Day.Should.Be.All.About.You+yourgroom :)

Working at Marilyn’s Keepsakes, I have the distinct pleasure of seeing how personalizing your wedding can truly make all the difference. Every couple’s love is incredibly unique; so, why, oh why, should any his and hers celebration not ooze with their own personal awesomeness?

I was totally inspired by an article I read in InStyle Weddings about how to tailor a wedding to your style and would like to share some of my favorite picks with you! Feel free to check them out, pick them up or put them down, but regardless, just be sure to live it up!

  • Let your pets strut their stuff:  Whether ring bearing down the aisle or simply joining in the festivities and smiling in photos, letting your favorite furred friends be a part of your day and have an event that includes all those you love :)

^^^^OMG. I die at that evs time!!^^^^

  • Make your chairs fit for a king (and queen, of course!): If you love flowers, which basically includes every girl under the sun, talk with your florists about what kind of arrangements they can do with your initials. The lettered bouquets are a super chic alternative to traditional chair covers and will bring structural and modern appeal to any setting!

  • Let your guests sip on a signature drink!  I’ve been to several events where couples concoct their favorite poison, name it after themselves and toast to its genius all night long (all night!). Even more inspiring is when brides and grooms center their witches’ brew around their décor and have them served in clear glasses. It really makes a nice, three dimensional color pop to any setting… not to mention, a great prop for photo ops!

  • Let them feast on your favorite foods: What better way to accompany your signature drink than with gourmet cuisine, centered around your cultural, traditional or simply favorite foods? traditions? Whether there’s a certain food your families have made a tradition or one your culture tells you to grub, bringing a part of who you are into your wedding day buffet is a delicious way to add a personalized touch of you to your wedding!

  • Gain greater impact from your place card holders: Is planning a seating chart for 200+ causing you painstaking amounts of stress? Well, fear not my friend, because dreaming up cool place card holders will be your perfect cure! Because the place card will be one of the first things they seek, it’s a great place to put a piece of you!

Eye-Catching & Uplifting Wedding Decorum That Really WOWS!

courtesy of bellethemagazine.com

courtesy of bellethemagazine.com

A few weeks back, I did a post on chandeliers titled: It’s All About the Ooh La La: Wedding Reception Chandeliers & Lanterns.  And the more I researched, the more I discovered how appealing the highly hung – but not the least strung – details can be for a wedding day decorum.

After perusing through several images on BeautifulBlooms.com, I couldn’t help but be inspired by these float-tastic furnishings and immediately set off on a journey to discover more.  (Of course by “journey,” I mean manic mouse clicking and by “discover,” I mean whatever Google Images wanted to show me… and yet, I digress.)   I went absolutely Lady GaGa for the one of a kind, optical illusions they create and fell even deeper in love when I realized their practicality.

Floating or hanging wedding décor is one of the best ways to get more bang for your buck!  Because they offer a means to create more levels of dimension throughout your entire reception hall, you’ll easily stretch your real estate dollar to its fullest potential by filling in areas that otherwise would be lost… I mean, helllo??? How can any bride to be resist that lure?

Not only do these suspended superstars create eye-catching allure, but they also offer brides and grooms a way to decorate their tables without blocking the view of their guests.  Because big, bold centerpieces can create such big, bold WOW factors, so many brides are drawn to them… but they don’t always create the most rational way for your guests – seated in between and across from them – to communicate to others or worse yet… see you!  Blasphemy!

Hence, only furthering the appeal of hovering centerpieces!  By cutting out the middle “man” altogether and suspending the décor, you can be as big and bold as you want without blocking the view of your guests!  It’s a win / win for everyone!

Just be sure to go over things with your venue.  Since some of these will more than likely need more planning to accomplish, you should definitely work with your reception hall vendor and / or coordinator to make sure they go off without a hitch!

And if you’ve found yourself already booked to venue that doesn’t allow or have a means to hang things, there are still several options for you to create this look.  One, consider using super tall, thin vases and placing floral or “pom pom” styled arrangements on the tops only.  This will ensure you’ll get the height you want with minimal to no distractions of your guests… Or I like the idea of using large, elevated glass cylinders.  You can fill them to the top with water, creating the illusion of “clear” space, and crowning them with your favorite flower buds, floating candles or fiber optics.  Check out some choice options below:

It’s All About the Ooh La La: Wedding Reception Chandeliers & Lanterns

courtesy of Victor Sizemore photography

courtesy of Victor Sizemore photography

After doing last Thursday’s post: A Return to Formailty: 5 Wedding Trends Designed to Razzle Dazzle ‘em, I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I spent almost half my time browsing through the images I found under “wedding chandeliers.”

I’m not even kidding.

Between the rustic and refurbished to the formal and fabulous, reception chandeliers, lanterns and the like were enough to make my head spin!  For serious!  When you consider the range light ceiling accessories have, it’s almost impossible NOT to be in awe!  Well-lit, hanging fixtures can be adorned with everything from flowers and bubbles to crystals and twinkles… making them agreeable to sleek and modern settings, as well as eccentric and outdoor scenes!

Not only that but it’s the fact that all these overhead fixtures will all provide lighting… and everyone – from photographers and reception hall coordinators to designers and professional planners – will all agree that LIGHTING is key when it comes to creating ambiance and setting / keeping a mood.

Sinead Kelly of Duluux Color wrote:

Lighting is such a subtle – yet vitally important – design tool. Good use of lighting will bring to life the most mundane design schemes. Put together with a great interior and you’ve got the perfect partnership. Picking a fantastic light fitting is just one element of the job. Where you place it, how it operates and the effect it has on its surrounding area is twice as important.

And I couldn’t agree more!  Think about it… Consider two evenings.  Both are EXACTLY the same.  You’re enjoying a nice meal with a nice man in a nice restaurant, but one is by candlelight and the other is under the harsh florescence of flickering bulbs.  One (the prior) has a warm, romantic connotation; while the other almost takes on a the beginnings of a horrow movie classic.  Not(&)Good.

Hence why lighting is sooooo important for setting the scene on your big day, and when you’re setting it, consider some of these overhead exposures, shimmering chandeliers and lovely lanterns for creating (& captivating!) just the right one! Check out below and let the lighting inspiration begin:

Because You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile: Teeth Whitening Remedies for Brides

courtesy of greenweddingshoes.com

courtesy of greenweddingshoes.com

If – in fact – a wedding day is the happiest day of a young woman’s life, she’ll no doubt be smiling from ear to ear from start to finish.  So, she’ll for sure want to be sporting nothing but a beautifully bright, beautifully white set of chompers whilst doing so!

While photographers have tools, such as Photoshop (thank the good Lord!) that can most certainly enhance even the least envious to most envious, they won’t have access to everyone’s film and surely not to your actual teeth (weird!) the day of!

So, what’s a bride to do when her whites aren’t at their brightest coming wedding time?  Well, I’m so glad you asked!

Sure, there are the over-the-counter Crest (or otherwise) white strips available at pretty much every local and national drug store chain, and yes, while these work like a dream – just ask my bf, Bre, and her almost glowing, not-in-the-least-bit pearly, ultra white smile…

Bre (left, clearly!) and me in Vegas for a girl's trip :)

Bre (left, clearly!) and me in Vegas for a girl’s trip :)

…they can get pricey and aren’t always suitable for sensitive teeth.  Take me, for instance, I have SUPER sensitive teeth and have never been able to use any of the dentally supported, store bought products.  For cereal, both times I’ve tried, it ended up feeling like screaming in my mouth.  Not pretty and not fun :(

However, I still – like every other woman on the planet – would like to smile bright in shining white, but because of my toothy rejection to whitening remedies, always fell a little short.  Boo.  In the past, I was forced to where red lipstick (yes! that TOTALLY helps!) or simply smile with less teeth showing.  Double boo.

But I’m happy to report, this is no longer the case!

Below are two Teeth Whitening Remedies that I know from personal experience work FAMOUSLY for even the most sensitive teeth, and cost next to nothing!  Feel free to pick your best fit, ladies, and be fully dressed with the brightest, whitest smile on your wedding day celebration!

  • Do once (1) a week until personal level of whiteness is reached.  Then, limit to using treatment once a month or once every other month.

Teeth Whitening Remedy #2

What you’ll do:

  • Using 1/4 cup of baking soda, squeeze the juice from half a lemon and mix thoroughly.  The solution will begin to bubble.

Pick the Hue to Fit your Wedding Mood: What Color Can do for Your I Do’s

courtesy of greenweddingshoes.com

courtesy of greenweddingshoes.com

I think it’s safe to say that most brides choose their wedding colors based on two things.

  1. Their personal preference, and
  2. The season/weather surrounding the big day

Both simple and personal, this school of thought has held up through the years, and while trends may change, this is one area that has remained constant.  No matter if a bride chooses navy, royal, baby or Tiffany’s, part of her mindset was / is / always will be focused on blue.

According to industry reports and online encyclopedias from places such as TheWeddingReport.com and Wikipedia.org, most colors tend to have dual meanings.  I encourage all of you, especially all you brides-to-be, to only focus only on the good… because nothing, and I mean nothing good ever came from being negative :)  So, feel free to find your hue below and see what it can do for you!

Red is the warmest, most energetic color in the spectrum, which is why it is the one most paid attention to.  (See, I knew it was for divas!)  It is associated with everything from love, passion and desire (great!) to violence, danger and fury (uhhh, not so great!).  While some cultures uphold red as a symbol of courage and purity, others revere it as a sign of guilt or warning.  (I’m sticking with the cultures who see it as brave and divine.)

Orange represents energy.  Still part of the warm hues, orange has a number of luminescent qualities, which include warmth, enthusiasm and vibrancy.  (Perfect for a wedding day celebration!)  However, orange also has a tendency to come off as demanding and controlling.  (Can you say, Bridezilla?)

Yellow both warm and friendly, signifies optimism, joy, imagination, hope and happiness.  In some cultures, however, yellow is the symbol for dishonesty, betrayal and cowardice.  (Note to all brides, stick with the inspirational version.)

Green often the most sited favorite color of women and men, symbolizes nature, health, renewal, generosity, fertility and vigor.  On a darker note, it also corresponds with jealousy, inexperience and misfortune.  (Feel free to ignore the yucky translation.)

Blue epitomizes peace, tranquility and harmony.  In most cases (which are the ones you should focus on) blue symbolizes unity, trust, confidence, loyalty and security.   However, (this is the part brides-to-be shouldn’t rely on) it can also be a representation of depression and loneliness.

courtesy of onewed.com

Purple/Indigo has the most regal representation globally.  Often associated with nobility and royalty, purple embodies wisdom, enlightenment and spirituality.  (Ooh la la!  A color fit for a queen!)  But even though it’s considered an exotic color, purple can also be seen as arrogant, cruel and mournful.  (Blah, blah, not listening.)

Black – despite popular belief – is the absence of all color and / or light.  It is said to represent everything from power and wealth to sexuality and sophistication.  On one hand, black creates a unique blend of elegance, formality and class; while on the other hand, it can represent mystery, fear and sadness.  (I’m gonna go ahead and say when referencing “weddings,” we’ll stick to the first hand.)
