Marry in the Roses of June & Life will be one Long Honeymoon

1953 June cover of Ladies' Home Journal

It seems that ever since I can remember, little girls are always taught that June is the month to marry… being a November bride myself, I couldn’t help but wonder why.  So, like any good researcher, I first turned to my favorite grade school subject, history, to see what I could discover.

And discover, my dear friends, is exactly what I did!  Historically speaking, there are several reasons why June has been the unmistakable month to marry.  First, June is named after the Roman goddess, Juno, who is famously known as the patroness of marriage.  I mean, hello???… seems like a pretty good start to me!

June is also the month known synonymously for warmer weather, and in previous centuries was typically related to the time of year right after a woman’s annual bath… and yes, I said annual… personal hygiene wasn’t really the main focus during the mid to late centuries.  I suppose, however, if everyone smelled to high heaven together, what diff did it make?  Haha!

Even as time went on, June remained the standout marrying month for female pioneers because it was thought if a woman were to get married in June, she’d birth her first child the following spring and have plenty of time to recover before the fall harvest.  (Is anyone else glad they were born in the 20th century?)

But it’s not just historical facts, myths, legends and superstitions that lead so many women to say “I do” in June; it’s also all the hype that the present day puts on it.  In Bride Wars, both Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway’s characters refuse to be anything but a June Plaza bride.

This same reference is made in Sweet Home Alabama when Melanie Smooter, played by Reese Witherspoon, reiterates to her supposed future mother-in-law that all the press would be expecting the Plaza in June… because apparently, if you’re a New York bride, it’s all about the Plaza in June.  And I have to admit, after getting an eyeful of the picture below, I can see why…

Without a doubt, June has been the hands down winner for “most likely to succeed in wedded bliss” year after year.  Several celebutantes – as if you didn’t already KNOW I’d need to reference them :) – have also followed the June bridal suit.

Tina Fey, Jennifer Lopez (on marriage # 3) and Nicole Kidman (on marriage # 2) all took the plunge in June.  Kendra Wilkinson, Alicia Silverstone, Christy Turlington and Jennifer Garner said “I do” during the famed sixth month of the year, and not to mention, Marcia Cross, Adriana Lima and Tori Spelling who all made their love offish in June!

The list goes on and on, people.  (Even with brides that didn’t make it – cough cough – Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Anniston – cough cough – wed in June!)  There’s simply no escaping the phenomenon known as the June Bride.  Between movie references, celebutantes and every day brides, stepping out of single town and into married life was then, is now and perhaps forever shall be, June.

Indianapolis Welcomes TV’s Hottest ‘Kids Next Door’ Newlyweds: Kendra + Hank

Indiana-Welcomes-Kendra-+-HankI know.  I know.  BAAAHHLEIVE ME, I know.  It’s for shame that I even admit this out loud; however, the best news I’ve heard all week – dare I even say all month? – is that recently famed Newlyweds Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Baskett are coming to Indiana!  That’s right.  The former ‘Girl Next Door’ and her main squeeze are the newest members to join Indiana’s finest!!  So, at the risk of sounding like a total nerd, can I just say, “hip hip and HOORAY!”

Lord knows, I love me some celebrity action!  And as a glorified, born and bread Midwestern Girl, I know that Indiana is not the pick of the litter when it comes to Hollywood hot spots.  Heck, it’s not even a luke warm litter; it’s probably more like “hey-I-flew-over-that-place-once” litter.  (Siiiigh)  So, imagine how pumped my little bride-to-be heart was when it came across this incredible news!!  Recently accepted as the newest member of the Indianapolis Colts, Baskett’s wide receiving skills can be held accountable for bringing this famed Mr. and Mrs. to town.  Way to be, All Star!

After watching their well-ta-do E! Wedding Special, it’s more than safe to say that my heart grew a little fonder of these two crazy kids.  As Kendra stammered and giggled through her vows, I couldn’t help but laugh myself… which is why I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before our paths cross and we start to hang out and tailgate and exchange wedding tips and advice – no worries, I’ll totally share with all of you – and just become the best of friends!  Haha!  What?  Too much?… I knew it :)

Okay, okay, while I’ll admit my thoughts may be a smidgey bit over zealous, I will say this.  The Colts are on the road for their next two games; so, what are the odds that they’ll “conveniently” be back in town for their next home game on October 4… the same day as my bridal shower??… Coincidence?  I don’t think so.  Looks like Kendra will be back just in time to join us!  Haha!

For real though, it really is exciting to have famous “I do’ers” walking around Marilyn’s Keepsakes hometown.  So, from our house to yours, K-Dub and Mr. B, might I just say, a big, fat, hearty Welcome!  And we’ll see you on Sunday!

Celebrity Wedding Style: An Eclectic Look At Famous Brides Through The Years

Carrie-Bradshaw-Celebrity-BridePlease tell me I’m not the only one who obsesses over celebrity style?  (pauses for a brief moment)  I knew it!!

If you’re a bride who finds herself going gaga over celebrity wedding news, fashion and gossip, rest assured that you are not alone.  In fact, my level of excitement on this subject matter is borderline embarrassing, but I simply can’t tear myself away from these famous fashionistas.  I suppose it’s their sense of “unattainable” and my sense of ”need to know” that peaks my curiosity, but regardless, there is something to be said of celebrity style… especially when it comes to weddings.

I even delight in famous, fictional weddings.  I mean, come on, who didn’t tear up during Season 2 of Sex ‘n’ the City when Carrie read this poem??

His hello was the end of her endings / Her laugh was their first step down the aisle / His hand would be hers to hold forever / His forever was as simple as her smile / He said she was what was missing / She said instantly she knew / She was a question to be answered / And his answer was “I do”

Seriously, <tear>  I guess it’s just the hope-FULL romantic in every girl to have a fairy tale ending, and because celebrities have the ability to act one out – whether it’s through movies or real life – part of us gets caught up in it.  Here’s a look at some of my fave celeb-butante brides through the years, and even if their marriages didn’t last, their style will live on forever…
